listening to myself listening

so busy in my head
thinking…
my steps
my posture
my partner
b r e a t h e
let the music flow
through
movement
rhythm
expression
connection

listening to myself listening

the energy
the space between notes

put on la cumparsita.

don’t think.

just notice

what moves.

the small shift

of weight.

the breath

opening a little.

the body

saying yes

before you know

to what.

then oblivion.

another composer.

another pulse.

another place

inside the body.

we spend years

learning to hear tango.

the orchestras.

the accents.

the ache.

the silence

inside a phrase.

but sometimes

i think deeper listening has nothing to do

with knowing the music.

it is knowing

the body

that receives it.

because music

never finds us empty.

it finds us

tired.

hungry.

open.

guarded.

lonely.

alive.

it slips in

through the cracks.

finds the places

we forgot

were tender.

and the same song can touch

a different place

tomorrow.

so maybe musicality is not listening

for the beat.

maybe it is

listening for

the pulse beneath it.

the quiet place

where something in us begins to stir.

and then

letting it.

the weight.

the breath.

the wanting.

the body

remembering

how to move

toward something it cannot name.
