“Life is like a rond de jambe: Everything will go in continuous circles. Everything should move continually, even when you are still.”
—ballerina Michaela DePrince, quoting her favourite advice from teacher Charla Genn
“Will you, won’t you, will you won’t you, will you join the dance?”
Lewis Carroll, Song of the Mock Turtle.
The universe is in continuous motion, evolving and devolving, from chaos to order, from indifference to meaning, from sinister to beautiful – and back again. An endless cycle.
This is the dance of creation and recreation, of transformation and decay.
We are all participants in this dance. We are all dancers. We are all moving in response to the primal thrumming of the universe. And we have the freedom, even responsibility, to fashion our dance in every moment.
The miraculous piece is that how we dance alters the world around us, whether we build up or tear down, whether we fashion beauty or deface it. Every time we choose what is beautiful, every time we listen to the birds sing, plant a seed, smile at our reflection in the mirror, give wings to a prayer, hold a hand, we are worshipping the good. We are serving the world. We are dancing.
And if you are one of the chosen few who actually dance the dance, who surrender their body to the rhythm of the music and allow themselves to be folded into the arms of the Beloved, what a special soul you are! What a treasure you have received. What a gift that you have to share.
You have dared to dance into the very heart and soul of the Divine.
